Example Bio of one of our consultants

Adrian Alexander

Adrian is a recognised delivery leader with over 25 years of experience in the Telecommunications industry, during which time he has worked for major suppliers (Ericsson and Lucent).  He also has extensive experience in building, launching, operating and transforming mobile networks from his time at 3UK (Hutchison3G). He is a natural leader in the development of large teams of people and builds dynamic teams to achieve key business outcomes. He has been reporting directly into board level and C-Suite members for the past 10 years in a variety of roles.  His success is built on an ethos of strong customer focus as well as building trust with key stakeholders at all levels of the organisations.

Adrian started his career journey at Ericsson in 1996 on the graduate programme, having achieved a 2:1 degree in Computer Science, studying at the University of Brighton.  Whilst his educational background was more on the technical track, upon entering industry he specialised in Project & Programme Management where he went on to qualify as a MSP Practitioner (Managing Successful Programmes).  He has personally led and been responsible for some major achievements and industry first’s that were business critical to either his employers or customers:

  • The delivery to a mobile UK operator their first SMS-C (Short Message Service Centre).
  • The delivery of a Mobile Prepaid service that was critical to a UK operator’s survival.
  • The creation of a portfolio of telecoms services that were sold globally enabling Lucent to break into the Global (GSM) market.
  • The design, build and operational launch of the Messaging and other Value Added Services for a new mobile operator in the UK.
  • The delivery of the core infrastructure within weeks to enable the launch of the first Mobile Broadband service in the UK.
  • The recovery of a failing programme being delivered to three different UK operators, saving Ericsson over £120m in liquidated damages.
  • The definition and execution of recovery plans managed at C-Suite level to ensure the resolution of product quality issues that were affecting two major Broadband Operators in the UK.
  • The renegotiation of a suite of contracts with a major Tier 1 operator to ensure a successful outcome for both parties, securing £100m business over a 5 year term.
  • The delivery of the first two chapters (tranches) of 3UK’s Digital Transformation journey.
  • The migration of traffic onto the world’s first fully virtualised Core Network and subsequent 5G service launch for a mobile operator.

A key success factor during his achievements is that Adrian ensures a team ethos of close cooperation and engagement across his stakeholder groups, where he has received several awards and recognitions from both his employers, customers (and partners) for teamwork, leadership and customer service.

On his career journey Adrian has held senior positions such as Programme Director, Head of Programmes, Director of Operations, Director of Core Network Transformation and Acting VP Sales.  Whilst Adrian’s core expertise is in Project, Programme Management & Operations governance, he demonstrated a natural curiosity to master the financial and commercial aspects of the business.  In a major role shift in 2015, exemplifying his appetite to step out of his comfort zone and seek new challenges, he became Account Director at Ericsson for a major Tier 1 operator in the UK.  Despite no direct sales experience, he led his team to exceed their account business targets for the first time in 7 years.

In 2017 Adrian made a bold move to setup as Alexander Telecoms Consulting Ltd and immediately secured a contract to lead the delivery of 3UK’s Transformation Programme, reporting into the 3UK board. Adrian became a critical part of 3UK’s transformation where he demonstrated his ability to work at all levels to drive the business-critical change programme, successfully delivering the first two tranches through strong leadership of the external consultancies and trusted board engagement.  Throughout the last 12 months he has been focussed on the role of Director of Core Network Transformation, leading a problematic area of the 3UK business that required strong delivery leadership, commercial partner management and daily operational performance accountability.  He has successfully transformed the area, achieving the agreed outcomes, through direct daily visible leadership which included taking his team through a consultation journey. This transformation was achieved with particular focus on delivery, governance, operating model and customer experience.

One of Adrian’s key strengths is his desire to ensure his team are fully on the journey.  He is a strong communicator and ensures desired outcomes are translated to Goals & Objectives that are meaningful at Directorate, Team and individual levels.   He takes a strong interest in developing people both across the organisation and within his own teams has had a track record of succession planning.  He has been active in coaching and mentoring individuals for the past ten years and has a proven record of helping his mentees develop and progress through their organisations.  He has also been active in supporting industry programmes such as Step into STEM.
